United Way launching Give 5, a civic-matchmaking volunteer program for retirees

(Stark County, OH) Mar. 15, 2022. April 21 is the first class for United Way’s Give 5, a no-cost civic-matchmaking volunteer program that connects soon-to-be retiring and retired individuals with meaningful volunteer opportunities that best fit their skill sets and passions.

Give 5 offers retirees the opportunity to learn more about nonprofits in Stark County that are addressing childhood poverty and learn about a wide variety of volunteer opportunities at one time, find a role that matches their passion and benefit the community through their time and talent. Retirees will be part of a learning environment (discovering the most challenging problems facing our community and uncovering ways to address them and make a positive difference), connect with other retirees and visit nonprofit organizations.

“This program focuses on ‘Baby Boomers’, people born between 1946 and 1964, and in Stark County, according to the April 2020 United States Census, there are almost 75,000 people 65+,” said Angela Perisic, United Way of Greater Stark County’s Executive Vice President of Resource Development and Community Impact. “They are a very large, active group of talented individuals with experience, expertise, passion, and for the first time in their lives … time. Volunteering can increase energy, decrease depression, give people new connections and a sense of purpose. This program offers retirees a wonderful opportunity to channel their talents and skills.”

The program will be implemented over three program days on three consecutive Thursdays, from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM at United Way. Program days last between 6 – 7 hours, with lunch and snacks included. Schedule includes orientation, guest speakers, bus trips to visit 13 different nonprofits focused on reducing childhood poverty, and a graduation. Each class session is interactive, fun, and social. Visits to nonprofits allow retirees to “see behind the curtain” to better understand the types of volunteer opportunities available and are encouraged to commit to a volunteer opportunity at the end of the program.

Interested participants can sign up for the first class at uwstark.org/give-5.
