United Way sets Bold Goals for education, income, health and a 5-year plan to change community conditions

(Stark County, OH) March 7, 2016 – United Way of Greater Stark County in collaboration with community volunteers and stakeholders developed United Way’s Bold Goals 2020, a set of six goals for working toward improved education, income and health in greater Stark County in the next five years.

United Way’s Bold Goals 2020 include:
  • Making sustainable progress toward 100 percent of eligible students being kindergarten ready;
  • Making sustainable progress toward a 100 percent high school graduation rate;
  • Ensuring that 70 percent of Stark County residents will spend no more than 30 percent of their income on housing;
  • Increasing the number of Stark County residents who report they are healthy;
  • Reducing infant mortality to meet or exceed the Healthy People 2020 Objective; and
  • Reducing opiate substance abuse.

“Bold goals are needed for bold change,” said Maria Heege, president and CEO, United Way of Greater Stark County. “They will take different approaches and new and increased collaborations. We believe when the community works together we can change the conditions of our community for the better.”

“Despite hard work, many of our neighbors are living paycheck to paycheck with no clear path to a more stable future. We’re working hard to help more families become independent and self-sufficient, to get more kids ready for school and to help more people become healthy. The Bold Goals will ensure that donor dollars are having a significant impact among the most vulnerable people in our community.”

Beginning in October 2015, three all-volunteer United Way Impact Councils comprised of nearly 60 community volunteers, leaders and issue experts examined requests for program funding. The Impact Councils will make funding recommendations based on the program alignment with one or more of United Way’s Bold Goals and its measurable outcomes in the community. Program funding allocations will be announced March 22.

“We’re calling upon the community to endorse United Way’s Bold Goals because they are about creating opportunity for everyone in our community to have a better future. It’s about making greater Stark County a better place to live, to raise a family, to work and to do business.”

United Way is inviting the area’s leading business, civic, government, philanthropic and nonprofit organizations to endorse the Bold Goals 2020. To learn more, visit www.uwstark.org/EndorseBoldGoals.
