YLS Volunteer Event: Literacy Kits
March 18 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Too many children are affected by Canton’s high poverty rate. In an effort to support them and encourage their love of reading and learning, Young Leaders Society and its members will assemble Literacy Kits for middle schoolers in Southeast Canton. The kits will be distributed to agencies serving these children through Hartford Middle School, Lighthouse Ministries, Tiqvah Hands of Hope, and Urban League of Stark County. Each kit will contain a book, coordinating activities, journal, pen, snack, and an encouraging note from the volunteer all in a drawstring bag. Our hope with this project is to not only provide books to children who might not have access to many at home but also to show encouragement and support from their community.
We are extremely grateful to C.A.S.T. (Caring and Serving Together) for their financial support to make this project happen.

HOW YOU CAN HELP!
We are looking for Young Leaders to assemble literacy kits in the comfort of their own home. Sign up for the quantity you want (limit of 10 per registration) and we will have your supplies ready to pick up in a minimal contact drive-thru at the United Way office in downtown Canton. REGISTRATION IS FREE because of the amazing funding we received.
Following registration, we will contact you to select your pick-up time frame from the following:
- Thursday, March 18 – 10-11am
- Thursday, March 18 – 12-1pm
- Friday, March 19 – 5-6pm
You will have a week to assemble your kits and we encourage you to work with others in your household to make it a group activity! Tasks will include:
- Writing a note of encouragement
- Preparing a constellation activity for the student
- Drawing or collaging your personal “universe” – a representation of your family, friends, pets, and anything else you want to share with the student
- Assembling the kit materials into a bag
You will then be able to select your drop-off timeframe from the following:
- Thursday, March 25 – 10-11am
