1. SCHEDULE YOUR APPOINTMENT

VITA, United Way of Greater Stark County's Free Tax Preparation, has tax clinics scheduled in many convenient places across Stark and Carroll counties. To ensure your tax preparer is available, you must make an appointment. There are two easy, convenient ways to schedule your free tax appointment:

2. TAX CLINIC LOCATIONS< DATES & TIMES

  • Go HERE to view a list of tax clinic locations, dates and times. You must make an appointment to ensure a tax preparer is available.
  • United Way of Greater Stark County just made it easier to file taxes. Families and individuals who qualify for the agency’s Free Tax Preparation clinics can drop off tax information, sign a quick form and then pick up completed taxes within four business days or less. Drop-off service available February 12 to April 9 on Mondays from 10:30AM - 5:30PM.

3. WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR APPOINTMENT

  • Your Federal and State Tax Return Forms from last year (PRIOR YEAR TAX PACKET/RETURN)
  • YOUR OHIO BENEFIT BANK LOGIN AND PASSWORD, IF APPLICABLE
  • Proof of identification – Picture ID
  • Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents or a Social Security Number verification letter
  • Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter for you, your spouse and dependents
  • Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents
  • Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc from all employers
  • Form 1095-A Health insurance marketplace information
  • Form 1095-B Health coverage information from another source (optional, if provided)
  • Form 1095-C Health coverage information from another source (optional, if provided)
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks—Form 1099
  • Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit, such as a blank check
  • Total paid for daycare provider & provider’s Social Security Number or business Employer Identification Number
  • If married and filing jointly, both spouses must be present
  • Health Insurance Exemption Certificate, if received

4. DO YOU QUALIFY FOR FREE TAX PREPARATION THROUGH UNITED WAY OF GREATER STARK COUNTY?  

  • Households: Income at $65,000 or less
  • If you are a couple filing married jointly and your income does not exceed $95,000, FILE YOUR OWN TAXES FOR FREE »
  • Schedule C-EZ: Net profit for business - with no more than $5000 in losses or shows negative loss

5. DO YOU QUALIFY FOR THE EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT (EITC)?

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a refundable tax credit issued by the federal government to low-income taxpayers. To claim the EITC, the IRS requires that you earn regular income from a job in the form of wages, tips, commission and salaries. While the EITC is able to help many people, many who qualify for this credit, do not claim it. The EITC is one of the largest anti-poverty tools in the United States. You could be new to EITC. About one-third of the EITC eligible population turns over each year, so check your EITC eligibility today at www.irs.gov/eitc ».

2017 Tax Year Adjusted Gross Income Limits for the Earned Income Tax Credit - Earned income and Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) must each be less than:
 

  • $47,955 ($53,505 married filing jointly) with three or more qualifying children – Maximum EITC for 201 is $6,269.
  • $44,648 ($50,198 married filing jointly) with two qualifying children – Maximum EITC for 2016 is $5,572.
  • $39,296 ($44,846 married filing jointly) with one qualifying child – Maximum EITC for 2016 is $3,373.
  • $14,880 ($20,430 married filing jointly) with no qualifying children – Maximum EITC for 2016 is $506.

United Way OF Greater Stark County's Free Tax Preparation program offers free tax help to people who make $65,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.
