SUMMARY:Mental Health and Childhood Poverty: A Virtual Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Event:  A Discussion of Stark’s Future: Mental Health and Childhood Poverty\nDate: March 9th\, 8:30 – 9:30 AM  | Type of event: Virtual panel \nPre-registration required. \n Register today here\n  \nWhen you think of children\, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Most people think of children playing\, laughing\, and overall\, being happy. Unfortunately\, this is not every child’s reality. According to WebMD\, nearly 5 million children in the U.S. have a form of serious mental illness\, and in any given year\, 20% of American children will be diagnosed with a mental illness. This may all seem far away\, but it’s at our doorstep\, affecting our children. \nThe first step towards any meaningful change is to have conversations and decrease the stigma associated with it. Join us for a virtual panel discussion where we will be talking about mental health\, the effects that it has on children\, and how poverty and mental health intersect. We look forward to exploring these crucial issues with you. \nPanelists: \n\nPatti Fetzer from Stark County Educational Service Center\nMichele Heberling from CommQuest\nMary Kreitz from Child & Adolescent Behavioral Health

SUMMARY:Stark's Future: A Virtual Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Event: A Discussion of Stark’s Future: Strong Neighborhoods\, Strong Families\nDate: April 26th\, 8:30 – 9:30 AM  | Type of event: Virtual panel \nPre-registration required. \n Register today here\n  \nFor 100 years\, the United Way of Greater Stark County has focused on building a better\, equitable community where every person has the potential for a healthier life\, a better education\, and more financial stability. During the past 100 years\, the needs of our community have become increasingly complex. Disturbing data shows there is an urgent need to address childhood poverty\, which threatens our youngest residents\, our community and our future. \nThe price of poverty is high. We must disrupt the vicious cycle of disinvestment and displacement which damage the vitality of communities of families with low\, or even no income. Real change starts with understanding where people come from and strengthening neighborhoods in partnership with their residents. \nJoin us for a virtual panel discussion on this important community topic. \nPanelists: \n\nDon Ackerman\, Canton For All People\nBetty Smith\, Executive Director at EN-RICH-MENT\nAngela Perisic\, President & CEO at United Way of Greater Stark County\n\nSee you April 26!

SUMMARY:Stone Soup - Feb 19
DESCRIPTION:Stone Soup – Centennial Celebration\nSaturday\, February 19th: 9 AM – 11 AM \nRegistration for this event has closed. We look forward to seeing everyone who registered at the event! \nLocation: UW Local 94 Plumbers and Pipefitters Labor Hall\, 3919 13th Street SW\, Canton\, OH 44710 \nFor 100 years\, United Way has been serving the needs of the greater Stark County community. Our commitment during this time has not wavered\, and as times have changed and needs have become even more complex\, we have evolved in how we address community needs. One constant remains in how we serve our community – and that is you. Volunteers are the backbone of our work and we wouldn’t be here today without you. It’s only fitting that we kick off our Centennial Celebration with a beloved family-friendly event that embodies the United Way spirit of what we can accomplish when we work together. \nStone Soup\, based on the children’s story\, is a favorite volunteer activity for so many! This great family-friendly event brings together volunteers of all ages to assemble meals for those in need in our community. Join us\, much like the villagers in the story\, to come together to maximize impact in providing hot meals to our community and see how as a whole\, we can make incredible things happen. \n\nWe are looking for 100 volunteers to donate food ingredients and help us assemble meals for those in need in our community.\nVolunteers will be assigned to bring ingredients (ranging from $5-$7 per person) needed to complete larger recipes\, assigned about 1 week before the event.\nWe will then work in small groups to assemble casseroles\, snack packs\, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.\nAll of the food will be donated to area shelters\, youth groups or community centers to provide meals to those individuals\, children\, and families who need it most.\nThis is a family-friendly event for children aged 4 and up.\nTwo locations will be available on the day of the event to ensure safe distancing protocols. You may specify your preferred location at registration\, but the assigned location is not guaranteed and is based on first-come\, first-serve. If you would like to be placed at a location with others\, please plan on signing up as one group to ensure you remain together.\nPlease note: all participants\, regardless of vaccination status\, including children will be required to wear a mask\, and practice safe distancing protocols to ensure a safe event for all.

SUMMARY:Read Across America: Story Time at Belden Village Mall
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, March 2nd\, 2020  10 AM-11 AM \nLocated at Center Court\, Belden Village Mall \n  \n“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…” \nSo writes Dr. Seuss in “Oh\, The Places You’ll Go”. On March 2nd\, in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday\, United Way volunteers will read two classic Dr. Seuss stories\, to help build a nation of readers. By reading to children we help send a clear message that reading is fun and important as well as work towards our goal of 100% Kindergarten readiness. \nEnjoy photo opportunities with Dr. Seuss characters and catch one or both of our public readings at 10:15 AM and 10:45 AM. \nReadings are open to the public.
