(Canton, OH) Oct. 7, 2009--United Way of Greater Stark County’s Women’s Leadership Council will host a non-traditional careers day, fashion show and luncheon as part of their Day of Mentoring event at Timken High School on Sat., Oct. 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

More than 200 middle school and high school girls are expected to attend the Day of Mentoring to participate in non-traditional career workshops for fields such as welding, building technology, engineering, CAD  and criminal and forensic sciences. Each workshop will have a creative project for the girls to take part in from taking mug shot pictures and fingerprints to soldering place card holders.

The day will close with a luncheon and What NOT to Wear Fashion Show. The fashion show will feature before and after looks of girls participating in the Day of Mentoring. The clothes for the show are on loan from local merchants to demonstrate appropriate attire for different situations. Some of the clothing scenarios being modeled are a work internship at United Way, formal wear for a school dance and school wear. Educators in Canton City Schools are assisting with the event.

The Day of Mentoring focuses on the Council’s goals of mentoring, training, educating and helping youth in the community to graduate.  Last year, the 312 members of the Women’s Leadership Council raised $942,355 for the 2008 annual campaign. The event is sponsored by The Timken Company and the Women’s Leadership Council is sponsored by Diebold, Incorporated.
