Gold Key Service Award

Since 1961, the United Way has recognized community leaders and volunteers for the impact that they have made on the Stark County community. The Gold Key Award recognizes those volunteers who have continually demonstrated the highest degree of personal dedication and service in a voluntary capacity to the United Way and/or community partners.

Congratulations to Attorney Thomas Ferrero, Boys & Girls Club of Massillon Executive Board Member, Kevin Smith, United Way Health Impact Council Co-Chair, and Attorney Amanda Walls, Domestic Violence Project, Inc. Board Member, will be awarded United Way's prestigious Gold Key service awards at United Way's Annual Meeting Breakfast, March 25, 2015, at the Walsh University Barrette Center. Kevin Smith, one of three United Way 2015 Gold Key awardees, was nominated by Tena Wilson, Executive Director of the Stark County District Library. Wilson says Smith is a “great advocate for the children and families of Stark County.” Smith co-Chairs the United Way Health Impact Council. He is a member of both the United Way Finance and Leadership Committees, and along with his wife, Linda, are members of the prestigious Alexis de Tocqueville Society. Wilson admires Smith’s get-it-done attitude and said she always remembers his quote, “I would rather run head first into a wall than sit on the sideline.”

Attorney Thomas Ferrero, 2015 Gold Key awardee, was nominated by Mel Herncane of Boys and Girls Club of Massillon. Ferrero has been a Boys & Girls Club of Massillon Executive Board Member for over 30 years and has been instrumental in establishing the Club’s endowment fund and helping grow membership from 300 to more than 1,000 youth. Herncane knows that Ferrero does not hesitate to get involved when he sees a need to be met. If he says he is going to do something you know it will be done.

Attorney Amanda Walls, 2015 Gold Key awardee, was nominated by Tracy Galser-Bacon for her work with the Domestic Violence Project, Inc. She serves on its Board of Directors, recently completing her third year as President. According to Glaser-Bacon, Walls is intense. Her passion is contagious, and her commitment is hard to match. Her attitude is so positive that she makes you think that anything is possible. She is a good coach and mentor for those to follow within the Board. Her personal determination is indescribable. "She makes things happen."
