“By the time some children reach kindergarten, they are already far behind their peers in skills and measures of school readiness. These educational gaps tend to be much more difficult and costly to close as children advance through elementary, middle, and high school. This realization has led many states to try to get it right from the start by expanding their financial investments in Prekindergarten services, with a goal to better prepare young children for school success. With public schools facing heightened accountability requirements, Prekindergarten has emerged as an important strategy to promote school readiness and close achievement gaps in elementary school and beyond.”  - www.centerforpubliceducation.org

Education is imperative to a child’s success and future, but literacy is something that many of us take for granted. Wouldn’t you like to give the younger generation all the amazing benefits of reading and contribute to more children succeeding in school? Help United Way of Greater Stark County reduce the school readiness gap facing at-risk children.

The EMERGING READERS program provides the opportunity to make a positive impact in the life of a local child by sharing the joy of reading.

United Way of Greater Stark County invites you to participate in the EMERGING READERS program and sponsor a child by providing a literacy item to them three times a year. Items can be age-appropriate books, magazines, flash cards or any items that encourage reading. You can purchase one item or a combination of items.

This is a great activity to do as a family and teach children about giving back to others, or with your workplace to encourage giving back to the community and boost engagement.

Provide a book for a child three times throughout the year (November, January and April)
Choose age-appropriate reading materials, new or gently-used
Be creative! Send hand-written notes of encouragement or package a book with other themed literacy items, such as magazines or flash cards
